Who flies there, and how much does it cost?

Yute Air is the most consistent bush plane service from Bethel.  Cost one way is $140.  Round trip is $260.

When you reach your site, how do you get from the airport to your home?

Someone from the school can pick you up on the Honda. If no one at the school is available, the agent sometimes offers you a ride.  It's about a mile walk from the airport to the school.  In August, it can be a muddy walk, so be sure to call the school at 907-967-8213 before you leave Bethel to alert the school staff that you will be arriving, and they will try to have someone there to meet you at the airstrip.

How big is the village?

242 people

(Geographic makeup-along a river, slough, coast? Tundra, muddy, hills, cliffs? Etc.)

Goodnews Bay is a very beautiful village on a twelve mile bay, surrounded by mountains. The surrounding area is tundra, ponds, hills, beach, bay and river. There are gravel roads to walk on that usually aren't super muddy. In the winter you can walk on snow machine trails. It is usually not very muddy or wet unless you walk on the tundra.

What’s the weather like, and what is it like in August?

In August the weather could be rainy or sunny and about 50-60 degrees. The winters are cold, windy, and a fair amount of fog.

How many students in school?

50

How many teachers?

Describe the housing (i.e., running water? honey buckets?)

None of the school houses have piped water. All teacher houses have honey buckets. The houses have propane cooking stoves and oil heat - and most of the houses are very drafty.  Some of the houses have water tanks that have water transported (a water hose from the school) to them.

Stores? Are they well stocked or do you order?

There is one main store in town that is well stocked with essentials and usually has some produce and eggs.  The prices are quite high. There are a couple of smaller stores in homes that sell mostly junk food.  There is a home-operated video rental store.

It is wise to order dry goods and have them shipped to you.  This can greatly reduce the cost of your food bill.

If you order, who do you recommend?

Costco, Span Alaska, Drugstore.com, Walmart.com, CVS.com, Fredmeyer.com ~ to name a few.

What should a new teacher bring?

Normal things to set up a household:  bed sheets, blankets, pots and pans, curtains and curtain rods, glasses/cups, silverware, cooking utensils, telephone, towels.  A VHF radio is also a good thing to have.  Many villagers use them rather than using the telephone.

For walking to and from school:  head lamp (or a good flashlight with extra batteries is helpful because it is dark walking to and from school for several months of the school year -  especially in the winter months), a small plastic sled and a child-sized wagon (for transporting your teacher stuff to and from school), good warm snow boots, a warm hat that covers your ears, warm, waterproof gloves, parka, snow pants, ice cleats and rain gear for the fall.

For outdoor fun: hiking boots, ice skates, fishing tackle, rubber boots, berry basket.

Indoor fun:  Scrabble board, basketball shoes, dvds, cds, art supplies, good books, TV, DVD player, Stereo, Rabbit Ears.

If you enjoy hunting and other outdoor activities: bring your equipment. You can ski at times and to get around fast you can use a bike in the spring and fall. There are extraordinary opportunities for outdoor adventures!

Do not forget your sense of humor!
