Who flies there, and how much does it cost? When you reach your site, how do you get from the airport to your home? A short walk on the boardwalk up to the teacher housing and to the school. The boardwalks are wide enough to use a four wheeler from the school to the airport. How big is the village? 800 people (Geographic makeup-along a river, slough, coast? Tundra, muddy, hills, cliffs? Etc.) Kipnuk is along the Kugkaktlik River. It is situated on a bend of the long river close to the mouth of it. Kipnuk is a derivation of qipneq which means bend.- twelve miles away are the only the two hills in the area. Whats the weather like, and what is it like in August? August is sometimes rainy although the sun comes out a lot. - weather comes in off the ocean. September is rainy with the cold creeping in by October. Winters can be very cold, quite windy, and sometimes blizzardy. How many students in school? 220 How many teachers? 15 Describe the housing (i.e., running water? honey buckets?) In the school compound there are several housing units. One building has three apartments. Two of these apartments have two bedrooms and one has three. There are also two compact houses that have two bedrooms each. A third house is a bit larger with two bedrooms. All of these are on the school water system and have running water, washers and dryers and flush toilets. They also have propane cook stoves, refrigerators and chest or upright freezers for food storage. A three-bedroom house is located a short distance away from the school in the village. It does not have running water. Shower and laundry facilities are available at the school. Water for the school and teacher housing units comes from large storage tanks. There is a limited water supply during freeze up, from November through April. Stores? Are they well stocked or do you order? There are three grocery stores - they are usually well stocked with basic dry goods. The prices are high so ordering most things is preferred. Fresh food items are very limited. Plan to stop in Anchorage to shop for grocery items and mail them. Perishables can be shipped via air freight. If you order, who do you recommend? Span Alaska and Fred Meyer will ship your grocery order. An online supplier is mailboxgroceries.com. A.C. Co. and Swanson’s in Bethel will also ship your phone orders. What should a new teacher bring? Bring some basic food items with you. You may not find items that you prefer in the local store. Bring general everyday needs for cooking, sleeping, washing, and bathing. Personal items that make the comfort level satisfactory are important to bring along. You will need rain gear and rubber boots in the fall and the spring. Snow pants, a warm parka, and insulated boots are essentials for the winter. If you want to order gear after you arrive, Cabela’s has a large selection. They have paper and online catalogues. | ||
