Who flies there, and how much does it cost?

ERA, Hageland, Grant...prices vary. There is an excess baggage charge of which you should be aware.

When you reach your site, how do you get from the airport to your home?

You enjoy a beautiful walk on a boardwalk.

How big is the village?

The population is around 300.

(Geographic makeup-along a river, slough, coast? Tundra, muddy, hills, cliffs? Etc.)

Newtok is located on tundra. It borders the Newtok River and Baird Inlet. Nelson Island replete with musk oxen is 6 miles to the south across Baird Inlet. The village is about 80 miles from Bethel. It is about a mile in length. The seasons are beautiful on the tundra. Many shades of green grasses and wildflowers in August. Golden grasses and red, blue, and black berries ready for the picking in the fall. Beautiful white snow and many days of blue skies in the winter.

What’s the weather like, and what is it like in August?

In August it can be sunny and in the 60’s. It also can be much cooler and rainy with strong winds. We found Gore-Tex rain gear great in August and early fall. The winters can be very cold. We have experienced temperatures in the -30’s[ not counting the wind chill ] generally it is not that cold, but minus temperatures are not unusual. You will need a very good down jacket with a fur ruff , goggles, scarf and warm gloves. However, you can wait to order these items until after you have been here a month or so.

How many students in school?

About  110

How many teachers?

8 certified

Describe the housing (i.e., running water? honey buckets?)

The houses are very well insulated. There is an oil furnace and a backup heating stove. The houses are furnished. They have all your usual appliances and a microwave. We also have use of a large freezer in most units. Some of the houses have water tanks that are filled with water hauled from the school. At this writing the tanks are old and residue will often come out of the faucets, so water for drinking or cooking needs to be hauled in containers from the school by you.

You do have to go to the school to do laundry. There is one washer and dryer set, which we all must share during after work hours or on the weekends. We are also encouraged to use the shower at school on the same basis. Most housing units have electric toilets.

Stores? Are they well stocked or do you order?

We do have two stores...Tom’s store and the Corporation Store. They stock basic canned and dry goods. They also have pop, candy etc. It is a rare occasion when fresh produce or eggs come in. I’ve never seen fresh milk ,but we’ve gotten used to boxed milk. There is often frozen meat and other frozen convenience products and sometimes there is ice-cream.

Ordering works well and there are a variety of businesses that supply the Bush. Span Alaska is good for cases of canned goods. Alaska Bush Shippers is a family business that shops at the Anchorage Costco and charges 15% plus shipping. Wayne’s Meat Market or Mr. Prime Beef in Anchorage are good places to order meat.

What should a new teacher bring?

Bring the things you enjoy doing. Bring books, videos, music , hobbies etc. You can get the Alaska Rural Communications System channel for free on TV if you have good “rabbit ears.”  Direct TV is available with teachers paying for the services they order.

As far as clothing, bring good rubber boots, and moderate weight outerwear for August and September. You can order the heavy weight winter outerwear including boots from many catalogs after you arrive. Daily clothing for work is jeans, sweatshirts, polartec, flannels. Don’t bring clothes that need any special care.

Most of all, bring a great attitude that says, “I’m glad to be here!” The students, the community and the staff are wonderful and you will be fortunate to come to this remote village.
