Costs are: $25-$30 for seat fare, $60-$75 to charter a 3-seater, $110-$130 to charter a 6 seater. Craig Air is owned by Craig & Emily Emery. They are prompt, efficient and personable. Hageland is also highly recommended. When you reach your site, how do you get from the airport to your home? You must call from Bethel before you leave to the village. The airport is across the Johnson River. Someone will come pick you up in a boat. How big is the village? 500 people. (Geographic makeup-along a river, slough, coast? Tundra, muddy, hills, cliffs? Etc.) Nunapitchuk is a tundra village - its very flat and mossy. There are boardwalks in the village for walking. Whats the weather like, and what is it like in August? Cool (50 degrees) and possible raining. A light coat, hat & gloves would be adequate. Winters are cold, blizzardy and lots of snow. How many students in school? 140 How many teachers? 10 Describe the housing (i.e., running water? honey buckets?) Running water & flush toilets in all but one housing unit. There are five "family or multi-people" houses, three "single" houses, including one without running water and flush toilet. Stores? Are they well stocked or do you order? There are two stores here. They are minimally stocked. It is somewhat cheaper to mail order. If you order, who do you recommend? Prairie Bush Shippers - they are slow but they are through the grocery store Carrs. So you can order everything Carrs carries. Fred Meyer (DeBarr location, K-Mart (Dimond/Old Seward), Walmart (Dimond/Old Seward). Costco (any location. Sams Club - you are able to get a membership in Sams Club through LKSD. They will ship your purchases directly from their store, without a middle man, making it easy to shop there. What should a new teacher bring? What ever you need to be comfortable. The local stores have limited variety. If you move in with someone they may have kitchen items. If you are moving into a single house you need everything (kitchenware/bathware) except furniture. Teachers are willing to help with supplies until yours arrive. Curtains are also not provided. A cooler is a good investment to bring fresh or frozen food out. There is cable in the village. We are able to receive radio from Bethel but it is not always clear. | ||
