Who flies there, and how much does it cost?

There is no airport in Oscarville. You can fly to Napaskiak and travel to Oscarville by boat, or snow machine or walking in the winter.

When you reach your site, how do you get from the airport to your home?

How big is the village?

60 people

(Geographic makeup-along a river, slough, coast? Tundra, muddy, hills, cliffs? Etc.)

Technically, Oscarville is a small island on the Kuskokwim River. There is mostly solid ground with tundra conditions away from the village. Boardwalks connect all points in the village.

What’s the weather like, and what is it like in August?

The weather is the same as Bethel. In August, it is getting cooler, but still warm enough for outdoor activities - boating, fishing, berry picking, camping, etc.

23 in grades K-10

How many teachers?

3 certified teachers, 1 associate teacher, 1 teacher’s aide

Describe the housing (i.e., running water? honey buckets?)

Teacher housing consists of 2 bedroom units with running water and flush toilets. The units are comfortable and can be made into comfortable “homey” places.

Stores? Are they well stocked or do you order?

There are no stores or post office in Oscarville. Napaskiak has a store and they are located across the river. Purchases can be made from Bethel stores, or order from Anchorage.

If you order, whom do you recommend?

Bush Mailer, Fred Meyer, Costco, Sam’s Club.

What should a new teacher bring?

Necessary household supplies, linens, mail out food supplies from Anchorage, warm winter clothing. Any books, or sports equipment (skis, skates, etc.)
